LATEST NEWS: Ghana’s Parliament Strengthens Security Ahead of Tuesday’s Tense Proceedings
In anticipation of potential disruptions during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Parliamentary Service of Ghana has issued stringent security measures. These actions are being taken to ensure the safety of key stakeholders, including the Rt. Honorable Speaker, Members of Parliament (MPs), and parliamentary staff. The security directives were outlined in a notice signed by the Deputy Marshal of Parliament, WG CDR Commander Bawa (Rtd).
According to the notice, several key security protocols will be in place. First, all MPs, staff, and members of the press will be subject to thorough screening before being granted entry to the parliamentary chamber. Additionally, bodyguards of MPs will not be permitted to accompany them inside the chamber, enhancing control over who enters the space.
The directive also specifies that vehicles will not be allowed to park near the Grand Arena, and MPs are required to use designated drop-off zones within the precincts of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). The Ghana Police Service will manage access and direct MPs to these zones. MPs have also been reminded to wear their parliamentary identification tags at all times to facilitate smooth access, which will open at 8:00 AM. Furthermore, the public will not be granted access to the public gallery until further notice.
These measures come in the wake of mounting tensions in Ghana’s 8th Parliament, following the Speaker’s recent declaration of four vacant parliamentary seats—three held by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and one by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The move has sparked significant political debate, especially as the nation heads into its 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, just 50 days away.
With these heightened security protocols, Parliament is seeking full cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure that Tuesday’s session proceeds without incident, as the stakes rise in Ghana’s politically charged atmosphere.
