Plastic Manufacturers to Protest Against 5% Excise Tax on July 10
The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced plans to stage a protest on July 10 in Accra to oppose the recently imposed 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products.
The protest, organized in collaboration with the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers and Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana, aims to start at Obra spot in Circle, proceed to Accra Technical University, and conclude at the Ministry of Finance with an expected participation of over 400 members.
The GPMA has been vocal in demanding the immediate suspension of the tax, warning of a potential seven-day production shutdown if their concerns are not addressed.
President Ebbo Botwe emphasized the urgent need for government reconsideration and renewed dialogue with industry stakeholders to avert economic consequences. Despite the Association’s repeated appeals, the government has not responded to their demands, prompting the planned demonstration as a further measure to highlight their discontent.
