Political Parties Commit to Peace Ahead of December Elections

Ghana’s political parties and presidential candidates participating in the December 7 elections have signed a Peace Pact, pledging to uphold peace before, during, and after the polls. The agreement highlights their collective commitment to ensuring a stable electoral process and avoiding acts that could incite violence or disrupt national harmony.
The Electoral Commission (EC), represented by Chairperson Jean Mensa, reaffirmed its dedication to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, November 28, she emphasized the importance of fostering confidence in the electoral system while encouraging political actors to prioritize peace and stability. Mensa assured citizens that measures have been put in place to guarantee a credible and violence-free electoral process.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, called on political parties, media, and security agencies to safeguard peace. He praised Ghana’s consistent demonstration of democratic maturity and urged all stakeholders to ensure the country maintains its reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
Meanwhile, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama raised concerns about the lack of accountability for individuals who instigate violence during elections. He stressed that while peace pacts are essential, their effectiveness depends on swift actions against perpetrators of electoral violence. Without enforcement, he cautioned, such agreements risk losing their significance.
The Peace Pact reflects Ghana’s ongoing efforts to uphold democratic principles and foster national unity during its elections, which have historically served as a model for other African nations.
