President Akufo-Addo Inaugurates Flower Pot Interchange to Ease Accra Traffic Congestion

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s infrastructure development. This state-of-the-art interchange is designed to alleviate traffic congestion along the North-South corridor of the Tema Motorway and enhance connectivity for commuters traveling between key areas of the capital.
The Flower Pot Interchange boasts impressive engineering features, including an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp connecting Shiashie to the viaduct towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp linking the viaduct to the Motorway towards Tema. Additional features include a new road passing through the old East Legon tunnel, pedestrian walkways, and essential road furniture such as streetlights and traffic signals, ensuring safety and convenience for road users.

Construction of the interchange began in March 2017, with China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited as the contractor and Deoke Consult Ltd providing consultancy services. The project, which lasted 93 months, was funded jointly by the African Export-Import (Afrexim) Bank and the Government of Ghana at a cost of GHS 677,839,999.50.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on November 19, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of maintaining the interchange to ensure its longevity and functionality. He called on stakeholders to protect the infrastructure and maximize its benefits for future generations.
This modern interchange is a testament to Ghana’s commitment to improving urban mobility and fostering economic growth through enhanced infrastructure.
