On Sunday, 26th  January, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama visited Ghana’s newly renovated Chancery in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of his engagements ahead of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government summit, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s diplomatic presence in East Africa.

President Mahama was received by Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Mr. Damptey Bediako Asare. With  accreditation to Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, Mr. Asare provided a guided tour of the upgraded diplomatic facility, highlighting the major improvements made.

Originally acquired by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Chancery has long been a cornerstone of Ghana’s foreign relations in Kenya. However, after being closed in 1980, the facility underwent  deterioration. It wasn’t until 2008 that the Ghanaian government initiated efforts to reclaim and renovate the premises.

The renovations included the construction of a new residence for the Head of Mission and modernization of existing structures. In April 2024, staff members were officially relocated to the refurbished High Commission, marking a new era for Ghana’s diplomatic engagement in East Africa.

Mr. Asare thanked President Mahama for accepting the invitation and taking a great deal of interest in Ghana’s International missions. In response, President Mahama praised the commitment of the diplomatic staff and  the successful completion of the renovation project.

Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson for the President, and Mr. Stanisluv Xoese Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations at the Presidency accompanied President John Mahama. Their presence shows the importance of the visit within the broader context of Ghana’s diplomatic efforts.

As Ghana strengthens its ties with East Africa, the remodeled Chancery in Nairobi serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to international engagement and diplomatic relations.
