On February 18, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama submitted his portfolio to the Audit Service, formally declaring his holdings as a major step to maintain accountability and transparency. The Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998 (Act 550) and Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana both specify the constitutional mandate that this action conforms with. Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah-Asiedu received the declaration, which contains information about the president’s holdings and properties.

President Mahama has instructed all appointed personnel in his government to submit their asset declarations by March 31, 2025, as part of his commitment to maintaining the integrity of the public sector. There will be harsh repercussions for those who disregard this command, including termination from their jobs.

This action fits into Mahama’s larger emphasis on openness, which has been a major campaign issue for 2024. In the battle against corruption, President Mahama underlined the need of asset declaration, saying, “While punishing corruption is necessary, preventing it is even more effective.” Additionally, he urged the Auditor-General to remind public servants of their legal need to disclose their assets at the beginning of their term, every four years, and at the conclusion of their employment.

Another goal of the president’s decision to make his asset declaration public is to encourage more transparency in government. Mahama acknowledged that Ghana’s asset disclosure system has been criticized for lacking openness and said that changes are required to make these declarations publicly available and prevent public officials from amassing unjustified riches. This action is anticipated to set a powerful example for other government appointees, highlighting the significance of abiding by constitutional restrictions and promoting increased public confidence in government agencies.

This move is expected to serve as a strong example to all government appointees, reinforcing the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions and fostering greater public trust in government institutions.
