Retailers Deny Cement Price Drop Despite Cedi Surge

Investigations conducted on the ground show that cement costs in Ghana, particularly GHACEM 32R, have not recently decreased, despite the growing enthusiasm on social media that suggests this. GHACEM 32R is still being offered for about GHS 120 per bag, and several dealers in Accra claim that the retail price of cement has not increased.

Despite the Ghana cedi’s recent excellent performance against major currencies—its best in years—retailers claim that commodities prices have not yet reflected this economic recovery. Contrary to what many dealers report on the internet, cement prices have actually been stable or have even slightly increased in recent months.

According to data from February 2025, prices increased by 9 cedis, raising GHACEM 32R to GHS 120 per bag. Cement merchant Atta Boafo said, “There hasn’t been any reduction. I even placed an order at GHS 105, and I’m still waiting for it. So all the talk online is just hearsay.”

Another trader, David Nartey, also debunked the rumors, saying, “I received stock from the factory today at GHS 120, and I retail it at GHS 130. The numbers don’t lie.”

Retailers blame a number of causes, such as high transportation costs, growing production costs, and ongoing supply chain issues, for the pricing’ prolonged highness. The persistent scarcity of clinker, a vital component in the manufacturing of cement, is one of the most important issues brought up. Despite the currency’s improvement, suppliers have been unable to cut prices due to the shortfall.

There may be a chance for price cuts soon if clinker supplies level off and the cedi continues to rise, according to some retailers. However, before customers can anticipate any significant adjustment in cement pricing, they are pleading with the government to prioritize addressing the clinker shortage.
