Nearly 100 Ghana Post employees were let go as a result of a thorough staff rationalization initiative started by Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations. He claims that the exercise is required to address an unsustainable hiring scenario and streamline operations.

Sam George revealed at a news conference in Parliament on Monday, March 25, 2025, that following the general elections held on December 7, 2024, about 600 workers were hired throughout the ministry and its agencies. He underlined that a reassessment was required since these hires had created an operational difficulty.

“Today, I authorized the termination of close to 100 employees at Ghana Post who were hired post-December 7. This is part of an ongoing rationalization exercise, and we will continue making adjustments where necessary,” he stated

The Minister noted that he inherited a workforce of 3,117 across the ministry and its agencies, making the staffing situation untenable. The operational inefficiencies were made worse by the additional 600 personnel, making it more challenging to keep a small and productive staff.

“If you take over a ministry and realize that nearly 600 people were recruited after the elections, you cannot expect me to inherit such an inflated workforce without addressing it,” Sam George remarked.

The Minister reaffirmed that increasing efficiency within the ministry and its agencies is the aim of the review. He promised that every employment situation will be evaluated individually and managed in compliance with appropriate administrative procedures.

“I will ensure that the ministry operates efficiently, eliminating excess staffing while maintaining productivity and service delivery,” he affirmed.

Discussions about recruiting practices and transparency in government hiring procedures have been spurred by the termination of Ghana Post employees and the evaluation of new personnel. As a cost-cutting strategy, some stakeholders favor the effort, but others wonder if it’s fair to end contracts after the election. More information about the review procedure and the future management of impacted staff is anticipated from the Ministry.
