The Ghana Police Service has arrested three people in Savelugu for allegedly smuggling a range of firearms and ammunition as part of a major crackdown on illegal arms trafficking in Ghana’s Northern Region. The Northern Regional Police Command captured the suspects, named as Gaba Abdallah Alhassan, Alhassan Abdallah, and Alhassan Abdul Kudus, on May 1, 2025, in a well-planned intelligence-led operation.

The arrests were the consequence of ongoing surveillance measures to impede the unlawful transit of firearms in the area, the police said in a statement posted on their official Facebook page on Sunday, May 4. Police recovered a sizable arsenal of firearms during the operation, and the suspects were apprehended at several hiding places.

The seized materials include an AK-47 assault rifle, a submachine gun, a Smith & Wesson SD40 VE handgun, and a single-barrel shotgun. Officers also recovered two magazines, five BB cartridges, 27 rounds of various calibers, 13 rounds of handgun ammunition, 15 rounds of AK-47 ammo, and 13 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, all of which were thought to be meant for unlawful distribution.

The accused are presently detained and assisting with ongoing investigations, the Ghana Police Service stressed. Official charges are anticipated following the conclusion of the inquiry, authorities promised the public, and the suspects will be dealt with through the proper legal channels.

In northern Ghana, where tensions and sporadic confrontations are frequently exacerbated by the influx of unregistered firearms, this arrest highlights the ongoing threat that illegal firearms pose to public safety. Police have reiterated their determination to continue their regional efforts to prevent the smuggling, distribution, and ownership of illegal firearms. In order to support similar actions and preserve peace and security in their areas, the public is urged to submit information.
