The Seventh-day Adventist Church is strongly advocating for an amendment to the December 7 elections.

In separate petitions submitted initially to the Electoral Commission, the church contends that the elections should be rescheduled from the traditional December 7 date due to its clash with Saturday, a day of religious significance dedicated to the worship of God.

Arguing for a change to either the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November, the church leadership engaged with the Electoral Commission on Wednesday, June 7, to discuss the proposed alteration from the December 7 date in a general elections year.

“In anticipation of changing the date for general elections from December 7 to the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November, the Leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church met with the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, June 7.

“The Church proposed to the EC a change from the December 7 date to the 1st or 2nd Tuesday of November in a general elections’ year.”

During an exclusive interview with JoyNews’ Blessed Sogah, Dr. Solace Asafo, the Director for Public Affairs and Religious Liberty at the Seventh-day Adventist Church Southern Ghana Union Conference, he explained that the church aims for elections not to coincide with any religious day in Ghana.

Simultaneously, the church is taking additional measures by submitting another petition to the Attorney General, advocating for an amendment to the constitutional provisions that currently restrict the timing of organizing parliamentary and presidential elections in Ghana.
