The High Court in Accra has sentenced Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former boss of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), to a 10-year prison term for causing a financial loss of GH¢90 million to the state. The trial was conducted in absentia after the court granted a prosecution application on February 24, 2023, allowing Attionu to travel to the United States for medical treatment in 2021, but she failed to return.

Daniel Axim, a former Operations Manager of MASLOC, was also sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement. Both were found guilty on 78 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and causing loss to public property.

Among the instances cited was the inability to account for funds, such as GH¢1,706,000 earmarked for a sensitization and monitoring program and GH¢1,465,035 for Kantamanto Market disaster victims’ support. Additionally, there were allegations of unjustified demands for interest on refunded amounts, with investigations revealing misappropriation of GH¢500,000 by Attionu.

Prior to the trial in absentia, the court had ordered Alex Mould, former CEO of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and actor Gavivina Tamakloe, to pay GH¢5 million bail bond to the state for their failure to produce Attionu, whom they stood as sureties for.
