Shalimar Abbiusi Shares Her Traumatic Experience of Detention and Deportation from Ghana

Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force Movement, has recounted her arrest, detention, and eventual deportation from Ghana as a deeply traumatic experience.
Abbiusi was deported on December 20, 2023, following accusations of using forged documents to obtain a residence permit as a student at Ghana Christian University College.
While the Ghana Immigration Service initially pressed charges, these were later dropped. Despite being granted bail, Abbiusi was rearrested and deported, a sequence of events she described as profoundly disempowering.
Speaking with Joy News, Abbiusi shed light on the harrowing ordeal she endured during her detention. “The experience was horrible but also eye-opening,” she said, describing the stark realities of life in custody and the people she encountered there. She added, “The feeling of being powerless was one of the hardest parts.
But I held onto hope and belief that justice would prevail, especially knowing that people were fighting for me.” Abbiusi also addressed allegations of document forgery, dismissing them as baseless. She questioned the absence of evidence in court and argued, “If there were forged documents, wasn’t it one of their own officers who forged them? The dismissal of charges against me speaks volumes.”
Abbiusi urged the international community to hold Ghana’s government accountable for what she views as an unjust deportation. Her case has sparked discussions on immigration processes and human rights, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll such incidents can inflict.
