Both artists were scheduled to headline separate concerts at different venues on the university campus. Shatta Wale was set to perform at James Topp Nelson Yankah Hall (TF Hostel), while Stonebwoy, the reigning TGMA Artiste of the Year, had a concert planned at Liman Hall.

The drama began on the evening of Friday, June 7, when rumors started circulating on social media that Shatta Wale’s concert at TF Hostel had been cancelled.

These rumors were confirmed by a communique from the Dean of Students’ office, which cited a lack of prior approval as the reason for the cancellation.

Despite the official notice, Shatta Wale continued to fuel anticipation among his fans. On the morning of the concert and just a few hours before the scheduled performance, Shatta Wale posted on social media, promising that he would still take the stage. His post at 6:26 PM declared, “In the next 3hrs I will be on stage @ #TF Legon campus ..Don’t miss this 🙌🔥🔥🔥.”

However, those three hours stretched into disappointment. Due to “security reasons” and what was described as an “order from above,” Shatta Wale was ultimately prevented from performing.

Frustrated and disappointed, Shatta Wale took to social media, launching a tirade against Stonebwoy. In a heated TikTok video, he accused Stonebwoy of using his influence to coerce university authorities into cancelling his show to avoid a direct competition.

Shatta Wale went as far as involving Stonebwoy’s family in his accusations, although subsequent investigations revealed that Stonebwoy had no role in the cancellation.

Entertainment commentator Olele Salvador, in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), clarified that the event at TF Hostel was cancelled purely because it lacked prior approval from the Dean of Students’ office.

Salvador’s insights were confirmed by Wave Africa, the agency responsible for organizing Shatta Wale’s performance. They detailed that despite securing a deal with Shatta Wale and promoting the event, the university’s security halted their preparations due to unresolved issues with the Dean’s office.

The tension between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy is not new. Following their infamous scuffle at the 2019 Ghana Music Awards, where the confrontation escalated to the brandishing of firearms, both artists were reportedly made to sign a bond agreeing not to perform at the same venue again. This measure was intended to prevent any future clashes.

This agreement resurfaced earlier this year when Stonebwoy’s manager cited it as the reason for withdrawing from a Sallahfest concert. Similarly, Merqury Quaye, the organizer of the Ghana DJ Awards, disclosed last November that he had to choose between the two artists when booking acts for his event due to the same restrictions.

While Shatta Wale’s concert was mired in controversy, Stonebwoy’s event at Liman Hall proceeded smoothly. The show attracted a large crowd and was deemed a success, further heightening the rivalry between the two artists.

Shatta Wale’s camp, represented by his manager Sammy Baah Flex, expressed their disappointment and hinted at legal actions. They lamented the loss of opportunity and the impact on Shatta Wale’s reputation, while also voicing their frustration over the university’s handling of the situation.

As this saga continues to unfold, it underscores the complexities and rivalries in Ghana’s vibrant music scene. The clash between these two giants at the University of Ghana is a stark reminder of how public perception and institutional decisions can significantly impact the careers of artists.

For now, fans of both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are left to ponder what could have been, as the dust settles on yet another chapter in their storied rivalry.
