Sir Elton John Unable to Watch Own Musical Due to Vision Loss

Sir Elton John has revealed that he is unable to watch The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, the stage adaptation of the popular film for which he composed the music, due to recent vision loss. At a charity gala performance of the show on Sunday evening, John shared with attendees, “I have lost my sight and I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it.” The gala, held at the Dominion Theatre in London, was organized to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The 77-year-old pop icon has been grappling with vision issues since suffering an eye infection in July, which he mentioned was contracted in the south of France. Although the exact details of his condition are not entirely clear, Elton shared during an interview on ABC News’ Good Morning America in November that he had been unable to see for over four months, and his left eye remains in poor condition. Despite his struggle, Elton expressed gratitude for still being able to hear the musical’s performance.
The Devil Wears Prada musical, which opened in the West End, had its charity gala attended by several famous personalities, including Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, actress Lily Collins, and fashion icon Donatella Versace. The event raised funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and Wintour, who has often been speculated as the inspiration for the character Miranda Priestly in the Devil Wears Prada series, described the musical as “entertaining.”
The musical adaptation follows the story of a young journalist, Andy Sachs, who becomes an assistant to the powerful and demanding fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, a role now portrayed by Vanessa Williams. The musical’s success is highlighted by the support of renowned figures in the fashion industry, including designer Betsey Johnson, who expressed her appreciation for the show’s portrayal of the industry.
