SONA 2025: Rural Teachers to Get 20% Allowance Boost
SONA 2025: Rural Teachers to Receive 20% Allowance to Boost Education

In an attempt to improve education in underprivileged communities, the government has implemented a 20% allowance for teachers employed in rural areas. The goal of this program is to encourage teachers to accept and stay in positions where their skills are most required.
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama announced this during his State of the Nation Address (SONA 2025) in Parliament.
During his address, President Mahama emphasized that improving education in rural areas requires strategic support for teachers.
“To motivate teachers and enhance education in deprived communities, the government will implement a 20% allowance for those who accept and maintain postings in rural areas,” he stated.
District assemblies will supervise and keep an eye on the program to make sure instructors stay dedicated to their assigned schools, which is necessary to ensure the initiative’s success.
Under the Teacher Dabre Initiative, the government intends to build teacher housing units in rural locations in addition to offering financial incentives. This initiative solves a persistent issue that has discouraged teachers from taking on rural assignments by guaranteeing that no new school will be constructed without associated teacher housing.
“Teacher welfare is essential to our broader goal of improving education nationwide,” President Mahama added.
The introduction of this allowance is expected to bridge the education gap between urban and rural communities, ensuring that students in less-developed areas receive quality instruction.
