SPORT NEWS: Black Satellites Secure AFCON 2025 Spot with Thrilling Comeback Over Côte d’Ivoire
The Ghana U20 national team, the Black Satellites, has successfully qualified for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) following an intense 2-1 comeback against Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-final of the WAFU B U20 Championship. This match, held at the Stade Municipal on Sunday, October 27, 2024, saw the Ghanaian team, led by coach Desmond Ofei, overcome a challenging start after Côte d’Ivoire’s Konan Loukou scored an early goal.
Despite trailing, Ghana demonstrated resilience and determination, equalizing before halftime when a corner kick deflected into the Ivorian net. The game’s momentum shifted further in favor of the Black Satellites early in the second half, as top tournament scorer Jerry Afriyie stepped up to convert a penalty, bringing his total to four goals in the competition and securing the lead for his team. Ghana maintained their advantage throughout the remainder of the match, withstanding Ivorian attempts to draw level.
With this victory, the Black Satellites not only advance to the WAFU B U20 Championship final—where they will face either Nigeria or Niger—but also lock in their place at the 2025 AFCON. The tournament marks Ghana’s return to the AFCON U20 stage since their title victory in 2021 under coach Abdul Karim Zito.
In addition to competing for another WAFU B title, the Black Satellites now have the opportunity to aim for a FIFA U20 World Cup spot, as the upcoming 2025 AFCON will serve as a qualifying tournament for the global competition in Chile. The top four AFCON teams will earn automatic qualification for the World Cup, bringing Ghana one step closer to international acclaim if they can maintain their winning momentum.
