Teacher Jailed 10 Years for Embezzling GH₵238K from Bank
Teacher Sentenced to 10 Years for Stealing Over GH₵238,550 from Rural Bank

The Asante Bekwai Circuit Court found 36-year-old teacher John Ankomah Boateng guilty of stealing more than GH₵238,550 from Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited and sentenced him to 10 years in jail with hard labour. Despite having just GH₵2.23 in his account, Boateng, a teacher at the Freso Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Junior High School (JHS) in the Bekwai Municipality, carried out the fraudulent transactions using the GhanaPay app.
Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum stated that the theft took place from February 9 to February 26, 2024. On February 28, the bank notified the Ashanti South Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the unusual activities. Boateng was taken into custody on March 13, 2024, following a prompt inquiry.
During interrogation, Boateng admitted to the crime and disclosed that he transferred portions of the stolen money to various individuals for safekeeping. The breakdown of the transfers included:
– GH₵10,000 to Isaac
– GH₵5,000 to Kwaku
– GH₵20,000 to Duah
– GH₵5,000 to Neymar
– GH₵40,000 to a travel agent for processing travel documents
Boateng was indicted and prosecuted before the Asante Bekwai Circuit Court after extensive investigations. After considering the evidence, the court found him guilty and gave him a 10-year prison sentence that included hard labour.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of financial fraud, especially in the banking industry. Additionally, it demonstrates how well Ghana’s law enforcement organisations track down and prosecute financial crimes. The public of Ghana is urged to exercise caution and notify the authorities of any questionable financial activity.
