The dispute centers around the use of the phrase “defe defe” in Team Eternity Ghana’s hit song of the same name, which has recently surged to the top of the Apple Music Top 100: Ghana charts and amassed over 2 million views on YouTube.

Kwame Mickey claims that the use of “defe defe” in Team Eternity’s song closely mirrors a line from the 2004 track “Defe Defe” by Hallelujah Voices, which was written by Osuani Afrifa and produced by Kaakyire Music Productions.

In his Facebook post, Mickey pointed out the striking similarity between the lyrics: Hallelujah Voices’ “manhyia Nyame a anka ɔbonsam ayɛ me defe defe” and Team Eternity’s “manhyia Nyame a anka y’ayɛ me defe defe.”

Both lines translate to a reflection on what life would be like without divine intervention, describing it as “defe defe,” an adverb in Twi signifying a severe or troubling situation.

While the rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases of the two songs differ, Mickey’s claim hinges on the perceived lyrical overlap. The debate has ignited social media discussions, with some arguing that “defe defe” is a common expression in Twi and not exclusive to Hallelujah Voices, while others believe there are sufficient similarities to warrant concern.

Team Eternity Ghana’s song “Defe Defe,” from their album “Testimony,” was released on May 1, 2024, and quickly rose to the top of the charts by May 7, 2024. The ongoing debate highlights broader issues of intellectual property and cultural expression in the music industry. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how both parties will resolve these allegations and what impact this will have on their respective careers and reputations.
