Teens Remanded for GH₵41K Gold Theft as Police Investigate

Two teens have been placed under custody by the Assin Fosu District Court in relation to the theft of GH₵41,000 worth of gold and cash from a gold business in Twifo Praso, which is situated in the Twifo Ati Morkwa District of Ghana’s Central Region. An investigation is still on because authorities think the occurrence might be a part of a broader criminal syndicate.

The prosecution, Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, told the judge during the court hearings that detectives believe there may have been a larger network of accomplices involved in the crime. He asked for more time to investigate the issue further and confirm the suspects’ true ages.

Both suspects, who say they are 17 years old, will be held in juvenile custody until March 5, 2025, when they appear in court again. However, because of the contradictory information in their initial testimonies, law enforcement officers are dubious about their actual ages. There are still worries that the male suspect may be older than he claims, even though the female suspect first claimed to be 15 before changing her age to 17.

According to preliminary investigations, before carrying out their plan, the youths had been attentively observing the activities of the gold shop. Police reports state that the female suspect was caught stealing from the store on CCTV. She allegedly gave her boyfriend and other potential collaborators some of the stolen money.

Following a tip-off, the Twifo Praso District Police Command, under the leadership of Superintendent Charles Addae Boateng, apprehended the suspects on February 16, 2024. The female suspect was found hiding in Egyaa, near Anomabo in the Mfantseman Municipality, while the male suspect was arrested at a different location.

Authorities are working to track down additional suspects who may have been involved in the crime. The police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
