Police and Military Collaborate to Restore Peace Amid Escalating Tensions in Bawku

In light of the increasing violence in the Bawku area, the Ghana Police Service, along with the Ghana Armed Forces, has pledged to restore peace and security within the region. Recent conflicts have led to severe unrest, particularly impacting the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway. Reports indicate that armed groups have set up roadblocks near Gbimsi, targeting individuals traveling from Bawku. This alarming situation has resulted in the deaths of eight people and significant damage to multiple vehicles.

To address the unrest, the Ghana Police Service announced the deployment of a collaborative team comprised of police and military personnel in Bawku, as well as along the critical Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale route. The purpose of this deployment is to prevent any further outbreaks of violence, ensure safe passage for travelers, and effectively manage traffic flow, thereby guaranteeing the security of the highway for those commuting through the area.

The violence in Bawku has been fueled by renewed disputes over chieftaincy, particularly following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had previously been exiled. His re-emergence has sparked heightened tensions among competing factions, leading to violent clashes and tragic loss of life.
