A strong downpour that lasted nearly three hours brought areas of the capital city to a complete halt on May 18, 2025, causing Accra to experience yet another round of severe flooding. Beginning at approximately 3:00 PM, the rain fell throughout the late afternoon rush hour, exacerbating the already tumultuous traffic in several areas of the city.

The most severely affected places were Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, portions of Tema, and other low-lying communities. Roads were swiftly flooded, making a number of important thoroughfares impassable and trapping cars in deep floodwaters. The high water levels that covered a lot of roads caused commuters and drivers to become trapped, with many of them leaving their vehicles.

Residents and city officials are concerned about the frequent floods because they not only endanger lives and property but also raise the possibility of contracting waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid. It is strongly recommended that residents in the impacted areas stay inside and stay away from floodwaters, which could be tainted with sewage and other dangerous waste products.

As the nation navigates the height of the rainy season, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has been encouraged to step up public alerts and preparation efforts. In the meantime, there have been fresh calls for long-term solutions to Accra’s growing urbanisation, poor waste management, and inadequate drainage infrastructure—all of which significantly increase the capital’s vulnerability to flooding.

Days prior to this most recent storm, Kasoa villagers expressed concern over escalating sanitation problems and cholera breakout fears. As the rains continue in the next weeks, there is growing pressure on the government and local authorities to take immediate action and stop more tragedies.
