Tragic Adentan Floods Claim 3 Lives, MCE Urges Action
Three Lives Lost in Adentan Floods After Sunday’s Torrential Downpour – MCE Demands Urgent Action

Ella Esiman Nongo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, has confirmed the unfortunate deaths of three people as a result of severe floods in different sections of the municipality, further highlighting Ghana’s ongoing struggle with the disastrous impacts of the rainy season.
The deaths were reported when Accra was pummeled by torrential rains on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Madam Nongo claims that the victims died in different circumstances at New Legon, Nanakrom, and Lakeside. “Two people died at Lakeside, one of whom was a four-year-old girl from Nanakrom. Another young man died in the New Legon area,” she reported during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, May 19.
The torrential rainfall began around 3:00 p.m. and persisted for close to three hours, submerging entire communities and disrupting lives across the capital. Worst-hit areas included Adenta-Dodowa, Tema, Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, and surrounding suburbs. The sheer volume of water overwhelmed drainage systems, with the Odaw drain spilling over and rendering key roads impassable.
Many vehicles were left stranded, homes were flooded, and commercial activity came to a standstill as residents struggled to find shelter and safety. Emergency services were quickly deployed to the Ashiyie area, where several residents were successfully rescued.
Madam Nongo blamed unregulated construction on waterways as a major contributor to the crisis, noting that poor planning continues to hinder flood prevention efforts. “People keep building in unauthorized areas, obstructing natural water flow. This is why we experience flooding every time it rains heavily,” she explained.
She called for stricter enforcement of building regulations, improved urban planning, and proactive measures to address long-standing infrastructural challenges contributing to seasonal flooding. The MCE urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent future tragedies and protect lives and property.
