Two individuals who allegedly stole money and other valuable items from Lillian Kumah, widow of the late Deputy Minister of Finance John Kumah, were denied bail by an Accra Circuit Court on Friday, July 26. The court session was presided over by Isaac Addo.

The suspects, apprehended in the Ashanti Region and transferred to the Police in Accra, denied the allegations and were remanded in police custody to aid further investigations, according to reports from Graphic.com. The court also ordered their cooperation in apprehending an accomplice, identified as Kwame Dunga, who remains at large.

The accused are scheduled to reappear in court on August 7, 2024. The suspects, Adams Sanogo, a trader, and Kwame Dunga, who is currently evading capture, are alleged to have conspired to steal a total of US$50,000, GH¢50,000, an iPhone 15 Pro Max worth GH¢15,000, and other valuables from Reverend Lillian Kumah. Additional items reported stolen include an Apple iPad valued at GH¢15,000, a Samsung Z Fold mobile phone worth GH¢12,000, a Microsoft laptop valued at GH¢7,000, a black school bag worth GH¢400, and an Apple Watch.

Another individual, Rabiu Falilu, a Senior High School (SHS) graduate, is also facing charges for dishonestly receiving some of the stolen items.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackom stated that Reverend Lillian Kumah, the complainant, resides in Achimota-Mile 7, Accra. Sanogo is a mobile phone dealer based in Adum-PZ and resides in Kokoso, both in Kumasi, while Falilu lives in Jamasi, located in the Ashanti Region.

The incident reportedly took place on December 29, 2023, when an unidentified person gained entry to Reverend Kumah’s residence and stole her personal belongings. She subsequently filed a formal complaint with the police, providing them with Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of the theft.

The police investigation led to the arrest of Falilu on July 24, 2024, when he was found with Reverend Kumah’s iPhone 15 Pro Max in Jamasi. Following his arrest, Falilu directed the police to Adum-PZ in Kumasi, where Sanogo was also apprehended. During interrogation, Sanogo confessed to selling the stolen phone to Falilu and implicated Dunga, another mobile phone dealer in Adum-PZ, who remains at large, as his accomplice.

The prosecution disclosed that Sanogo and Falilu were cautioned, charged, and brought before the court. Meanwhile, efforts to capture Dunga are ongoing.

During the bail hearing, counsel for the accused argued that both Sanogo and Falilu had fixed residences, posed no flight risk, and were willing to continue assisting the police in their investigations.

The lawyer described Sanogo as a middleman who purchased the phone from Kwame, while Falilu, a recent SHS graduate, led the police to Sanogo.

The prosecution opposed the bail application, asserting that releasing the accused could interfere with the investigation and that they might not appear for trial. They emphasized that both suspects had been evading arrest since 2023, only to be apprehended recently by police intelligence operatives in the Ashanti Region.

In light of these arguments, the court denied bail to Sanogo and Falilu, maintaining their remand in police custody to facilitate the ongoing investigation and ensure their presence at the upcoming court date on August 7, 2024. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to apprehend all parties involved in the theft and ensure justice for the victim, Reverend Lillian Kumah.
