The University of Ghana (UG) has solidified its position as a leader in higher education, ranking first in Ghana and securing the fifth spot in West Africa in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings. This achievement highlights the institution’s dedication to academic excellence, impactful research, and societal contributions.

UG achieved an impressive overall score of 74.3, excelling in key areas that emphasize its holistic approach to education. The university scored 79.7 in ethical leadership, showcasing its commitment to fostering integrity and responsibility among students. Additionally, a high student engagement score of 79.6 reflects UG’s efforts to provide an inclusive and vibrant academic environment.

The institution’s Africa impact score of 78.8 underscores its proactive role in addressing regional challenges through innovative research and community engagement. Furthermore, a score of 75.2 in access and fairness illustrates UG’s focus on providing educational opportunities to students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Despite resource constraints, UG demonstrated effective financial management, scoring 61.3 in the resources and finance category. These accomplishments align with the university’s 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes transformative student experiences, impactful research, and sustainable resource mobilization.

The recognition is part of a broader trend, with Ghana emerging as the second-best-performing country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The rankings evaluate universities on criteria like marginalized group access, leadership development, and the preservation of African heritage. The inclusion of ethical leadership as a key pillar further underscores the importance of nurturing moral and innovative leaders.

Notable advisory board members, including Sylvia Kunkyebe of the Mastercard Foundation and Patrick Awuah, founder of Ashesi University, contributed to ensuring the rankings’ relevance and rigor. UG’s continued rise highlights its leadership in regional education and its enduring impact on students and stakeholders.
