University of Ghana Addresses Missing Medallion Claims & Fees
University of Ghana Refutes Claims of Missing Graduation Medallions, Clarifies Fee Breakdown

The University of Ghana has formally responded to and denied media reports that it took more than GH₵11 million in graduation fees without distributing scroll holders or medallions. The university has rejected the debate as false and deceptive, which arose following a JoyNews report.
The GH₵500 graduation fee paid by each of the 15,776 graduates, the University explained in a statement released on February 17, 2025, provides a number of necessary services, such as gown rentals, a congregation newspaper, university-branded souvenirs, and administrative overheads. Instead of the GH₵11 million that was widely reported, the total estimated revenue from these fees, provided all are paid in full, is GH₵7,888,000.
Although the university admitted that the scroll holders and medallions were unavailable for the commencement ceremonies, it clarified that the reason for this was procurement difficulties. The products would be delivered after the procurement procedure was over, the institution had notified graduates in an official notification dated February 10, 2025. The statement urged the public to ignore the false allegations and instead rely on the university’s official communications for factual information, further criticizing JoyNews for posting a sensationalized piece without fact-checking.
This clarification comes as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to transparency and to addressing concerns related to its services. The institution remains focused on ensuring that its graduates have a positive and seamless graduation experience despite the delays in some ceremonial items.
