Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Seeks Medical Treatment Abroad Following Sudden Illness

Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president of Ghana, was admitted to the hospital after experiencing an unforeseen medical issue. The Vice President became ill shortly after wrapping up her official duties the day before, and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, March 29, according to a statement released by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson.
Medical experts have recommended that she seek advanced healthcare overseas for additional evaluation and treatment after completing initial medical assessments and treatment at UGMC. The government’s commitment to providing the Vice President with the finest care possible was reaffirmed to the public in the official statement.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who is 73 years old, became Ghana’s first female vice president when she took office on January 7, 2025, following President John Dramani Mahama’s win in the general elections of 2024 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
She is an experienced public worker and a successful scholar who was born in Komenda, Central Region, on November 22, 1951. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English and French from the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Opoku-Agyemang went on to York University in Canada to obtain her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in English literature. She ascended the academic levels during her career to become the first female vice chancellor of UCC in 2008.
During her tenure as Ghana’s Minister of Education from 2013 to 2017, she spearheaded key reforms, including enhancing teacher training programs, improving educational infrastructure, and expanding access to quality education.
A staunch advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang remains a beacon of inspiration to many. She is married to Mr. Badu Opoku-Agyemang, and they have three children.
