WAEC Releases 2024 BECE Provisional Results for School and Private Candidates
BREAKING: WAEC Releases 2024 BECE Provisional Results for School and Private Candidates
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially announced the release of provisional results for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both school and private candidates. In a press statement dated October 19, 2024, WAEC informed the general public that results for school candidates will be delivered to their respective schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education.
Private candidates, meanwhile, can access their results directly on the Council’s official website, [www.waecgh.org](http://www.waecgh.org).
This year’s BECE saw a significant number of candidates sitting for the exams, and WAEC has worked diligently to ensure that the results are processed accurately and released on time. The statement further indicated that school candidates who prefer to check their results individually can also do so via the WAEC website, providing easy access for all students eager to know their performance.
Statistics of Candidates and Examination Centers
A total of 569,236 candidates participated in the 2024 BECE, comprising 282,703 males and 286,533 females. These candidates were drawn from 19,505 schools across the country, highlighting the extensive reach of this crucial examination. The candidates sat for their exams in 2,123 examination centers nationwide.
The statistics also show WAEC’s commitment to providing inclusive education, as 59 candidates with visual impairments, 263 candidates with hearing impairments, and 161 candidates with other special needs, such as physical disabilities or learning difficulties, were accommodated. These students were provided with appropriate support measures, ensuring they had the best possible conditions under which to sit their exams.
Despite the large number of candidates registered, 3,845 candidates were reported absent from the examinations for various reasons. The reasons for these absences were not detailed in the statement, but absences in such numbers are usually due to issues such as illness, lack of preparation, or personal circumstances that may have prevented students from attending.
Private Candidates
The BECE for private candidates continues to grow, providing opportunities for individuals who, for various reasons, did not take the exam during their school years. In 2024, 1,390 private candidates registered for the examination, including 750 males and 640 females. These private candidates were spread across 15 centers, mostly situated in the regional capitals, to make access more convenient.
Despite the increase in private candidates, the absentee rate was relatively low, with only 57 candidates failing to show up for the examination. This absentee figure, although small compared to the total number of candidates, reflects the commitment of private candidates to furthering their education.
Examination Malpractices and Sanctions
WAEC has always emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward examination malpractice, and this year’s BECE was no exception. Following the marking and review of scripts, several cases of irregularities were identified. These included candidates bringing unauthorized materials into the examination hall and colluding with others to cheat during the exams.
As a result of these infractions, the Examiners’ Appointment Committee for the BECE met on October 16, 2024, for its 35th meeting and decided on the following sanctions:
1.Cancellation of Subject Results:
The results of 377 school candidates and 3 private candidates were cancelled due to their involvement in cheating. These candidates were found to have brought foreign materials, such as prepared notes or textbooks, into the examination hall, or had engaged in collusion with other candidates to share answers.
2. Cancellation of Entire Results:
The entire results of 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate were also cancelled. These cases were more severe, involving systemic cheating or gross misconduct during the examination process.
3.Cancellation of Entire Results for Schools:
WAEC took further steps by cancelling the results of 33 school candidates and 3 private candidates who were found to have been involved in organized malpractice, possibly facilitated by teachers or invigilators. This underscores the Council’s commitment to maintaining fairness and integrity in its examinations.
WAEC’s Commitment to Integrity
The West African Examinations Council continues to uphold the highest standards of integrity in conducting its examinations. The Council recognizes that the BECE is a critical step in the academic progression of students, and as such, ensuring the fairness and credibility of the examination process is paramount.
WAEC has repeatedly warned candidates and schools about the consequences of engaging in examination malpractices. The measures taken in response to the incidents of cheating this year serve as a reminder that the Council will not hesitate to take stringent actions to preserve the value and reputation of its qualifications.
Candidates who wish to check their results can do so by visiting the WAEC website. The Council encourages all students to check their results through this platform, offering a convenient and secure way to access the outcome of their hard work.
Looking Forward
As the BECE results are released, candidates now look toward the future. For school candidates, the next step is often to gain admission to senior high schools or technical and vocational institutes, while private candidates may use the results to pursue further education or career advancement.
WAEC has assured the public that it will continue to improve its processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy in the management of national examinations. The 2024 BECE is yet another milestone in the Council’s ongoing mission to provide quality assessment services across the West African subregion.
