The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that some students involved in examination malpractice used Artificial Intelligence (AI) software to generate answers to some of the questions in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted for only Ghanaian candidates.

The council said that it had withheld the results of such candidates for further investigation. The embattled candidates are spread across 235 schools.

“Yet still, some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence-generated answers. These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of investigations,” WAEC revealed.

WAEC released provisional results for all school candidates today, December 18, 2023, with the caveat that login details will be sent to heads of schools as soon as possible to enable candidates have access to their results.

Statistics on the examination show that the pass rate is the highest since 2020 when the first batch of free senior high school beneficiaries sat the examination.
