Water Crisis in Accra Due to Faulty Pumps at GWCL Stations

Residents in several areas of Accra are currently facing significant water shortages that have escalated in recent months, primarily due to malfunctioning pumps at the Ghana Water Company Limited’s (GWCL) production stations. This disruption has forced many households to depend on costly private water vendors, leading to a financial strain for families already struggling with high living costs.

Communities such as Dansoman and Achimota have been particularly hard hit, experiencing inconsistent water supply. Some areas are receiving water only once a week, while certain neighborhoods in Dansoman have gone without regular access for over six months. This prolonged shortage has compelled residents to purchase water from tanker operators, which adds to their financial burdens. Reports indicate that families are paying between 50 and 70 cedis per tank, a significant expense that many find unsustainable.

A resident from Achimota expressed her frustration, stating, “We’ve been without regular water for months. We only get supply once a week, and that’s not enough. We have no choice but to buy from the water tankers, but it’s expensive. This can’t go on.” Such sentiments reflect the growing discontent among affected residents who are struggling to cope with the escalating costs of accessing basic water supplies.

In light of the ongoing crisis, Charles Tulasi, the Chief Productions Manager of GWCL, has acknowledged the severity of the situation. He attributed the shortages to the defective pumps at critical water production stations. However, he assured residents that new water plants have been procured and are expected to be operational by the end of October. “We understand the frustration of our customers, and we want to assure them that relief is on the way. The faulty pumps will be replaced with new ones, which we expect to significantly improve water supply,” Tulasi stated.

Additionally, he urged the public to support GWCL by promptly paying their water bills, emphasizing that timely payments are crucial for maintaining and enhancing the company’s infrastructure, ultimately leading to a more reliable water supply.

Until the new equipment is installed and the water supply stabilizes, residents will have to endure these shortages. With the GWCL’s promise of consistent water flow by the end of October, there is cautious optimism among the community that the situation will improve soon. Meanwhile, the company is encouraging the public to conserve water and remain patient as they work to resolve the ongoing issues.
