John Alfred Tinniswood, World’s Oldest Man, Passes Away at 112

John Alfred Tinniswood, the world’s oldest living man, has passed away at the age of 112, his family confirmed. Tinniswood, who lived in a care home in Southport, died on Monday, surrounded by love and music.
His remarkable life spanned over a century, marked by his wit, intelligence, and steadfastness through tumultuous times.
Born on August 26, 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, Tinniswood achieved the status of the UK’s oldest man in 2020. In April 2024, he was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest man, following the death of Juan Vicente Pérez Mora. Throughout his life, he remained an active Liverpool FC supporter, living through most of the club’s 66 top-flight titles. Tinniswood’s family fondly remembered his many fine qualities, including his intelligence, bravery, and calmness under pressure, which served him well during his military service in World War II. He was also known for his talents in mathematics and his love of conversation.
He had a successful career with the Royal Army Pay Corps, where his work involved logistical duties such as locating stranded soldiers and organizing food supplies.
After the war, Tinniswood worked for the Royal Mail and later as an accountant for Shell and BP, retiring in 1972. He continued to stay active during his retirement, volunteering as a church elder and delivering sermons. His family described him as a “great conversationalist” with a love for life that inspired both care home staff and fellow residents.
Tinniswood’s family requested donations in his memory be made to Age UK or a charity of their choice. He is survived by his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
